Hold Senator Graham to his word and demand Senator Scott vote NO!

Senator Graham appears to have lined up enough support to move ahead with a vote to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Sept. 18. With only weeks before the American people vote on who they want to lead this country forward, the decision on a nomination to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg must be made by the winner of this Presidential election.

Lindsey Graham was right to say, 'use my words against me.'

As Americans have been reminded time after time since 2016, elections have consequences — dire consequences for the economy, public health, the environment, and civil rights, to name a few. But perhaps nowhere have those consequences been felt more acutely than in the United States Senate with a quick confirmation vote for President Donald Trump’s nominee to the United States Supreme Court with mere weeks before the presidential election. It’s a sharp departure from the precedent they set in 2016. Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia died in February of that year, nearly nine months before that year’s election. With President Barack Obama set to nominate a replacement who would pull the court to the left, Senate Republicans said that the seat should not be filled in an election year, and refused to hold hearings to consider Obama’s eventual nominee, Judge Merrick Garland. BACK THEN SENATOR GRAHAM SAID: “I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said, let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination, and you could use my words against me and you’d be absolutely right. We’re setting a precedent here today, Republicans are, that in the last year, at least of a lame-duck eight-year term, I would say it’s going to be a four-year term, that you’re not going to fill a vacancy on the Supreme Court based on what we’re doing here today. That’s going to be the new rule,” Senator Graham during a Judiciary Committee meeting in March 2016. NOW: “I therefore think it is important that we proceed expeditiously to process any nomination made by President Trump to fill this vacancy. I am certain if the shoe were on the other foot, you would do the same,” With only weeks before the American people vote on who they want to lead this country forward, the decision on a nomination to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg must be made by the winner of this Presidential election. Senator Graham was absolutely right to say, 'use my words against me.' The hypocrisy now on display in the Senate, as you and fellow Republicans reverse their 2016 positions on filling Supreme Court vacancies in election years, demonstrates your sense of impunity and utter disregard for electoral consequences by voters who disagree with their radical-right agenda. And I will hold you accountable at the ballot box. It's obvious, Senator Graham, that your words mean nothing and the people of South Carolina , Democrats, Independents and moderate Republicans, will hold you and Senator Scott accountable at the ballot box. Elections have consequences and those of us who have signed this petition recognize that you no longer care about us.
