Message:

As a South Carolinian and your constituent, I am writing to urge you to oppose H.4756, which would target and discriminate transgender, nonbinary, and queer youth in public K-12 schools and public colleges & universities. This bill and its language instill fear and perpetuate violence. H.4756 does not actually protect privacy. Instead, it invites surveillance, suspicion, and enforcement of rigid gender norms, putting all students, especially cisgender girls and women who don’t fit stereotypes, at risk of being questioned or harassed. There is no evidence of widespread issues in schools that justify this legislation. Policies like this create fear and division where none is needed. This bill is another attempt to find a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. It reinforces the idea that women need protection and women’s bodies are allowed to be judged to determine acceptability. I ask you to lead with compassion and empathy to not use your political power to restrict the individuals that would be deeply impacted by this legislation. Please vote NO on the bill H. 4756 to protect all students’ dignity, safety and privacy.
