The South Carolina Equality Board of Directors is pleased to announce that James Agens has been hired as the Executive Director. 

James is a dedicated and passionate advocate for equality, inclusivity, and community engagement –uplifting the LGBTQ+ community and creating spaces where everyone is seen, heard, and celebrated. For James, advocacy is about visibility by shining a light on the diverse voices within our community and ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table and a vision of a world where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or identity.

As a proud University of South Carolina alumnus, James has worked to support and uplift the LGBTQ+ community through his involvement with the Famously Hot South Carolina Pride Parade and Festival and as a 2025 Experience Columbia Ambassador.

With experience in both community organizing and policy advocacy, James is dedicated to bridging gaps and building networks that support sustainable change. James approaches leadership through collaboration, believing that sustainable change occurs when people are empowered and brought together. His leadership style focuses on creating spaces for dialogue, fostering education, and promoting greater understanding and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.

James remarked when joining us: "As Executive director, I'm excited to lead SC Equality toward a future where LGBTQ+ rights in South Carolina are not just protected but embraced by all.  With a focus on education, collaboration, and advocacy, I look forward to continuing SC Equality's important work statewide in both local communities and the General Assembly." The Board of Directors is excited to work with him and to have his leadership as we strive for a South Carolina where Equal Means Everyone.
